"You can't hide from your fears forever"
– Bete's hidden dialogue at the end of "Dust"

Betty better known as Bête Noire, ofter referred as Betty, is the main antagonist of Season 2 in Glitchtale. She is a physical incarnation of the soul trait FEAR and was created to ensure humans and monsters will never live in peace. She seeks to gain the power to fulfill her purpose and is a spell that lacks certain human emotions.

They is voiced by Courtney (Project SNT).

Profile

Bête Noire is powerful because of her soul trait of Fear which is equally powerful with the soul of Determination. She is also capable of using strings to stab through a human's or monster's SOUL.

Appearance

Classic form

Bête physically appears as a cute preteen girl that has brown hair with tips of pink on the edges that's about medium-length. The closer she is to be able to use her Rhabdophobia magic, the pinker her hair will be, starting from the bottom. Once Rhabdophobia is available for her, her hair becomes completely pink with no trace of brown. She wears a magenta skirt which had its edges torn as seen in the My Promise trailer (referencing Amber's torn skirt in Glitchtale Origins: The Black Beast), a light purple turtleneck with a large light pink stripe at its bottom, light purple leggings (except in My Sunshine) and brown boots that are pretty close to reaching her knees.

HATE Form

She has pink pupils that become brighter when HATE controls her and her white sclera turns darker depending on how much HATE is being used and her mouth becomes crooked and fully black if the HATE takes over.

Fused Form

With her soul intact, her sclera becomes a dark shade of magenta, her pupil becomes a darker shade of pink, and her mouth becomes more crooked, similar to Kumu's. Her body is no longer empty and is filled with pink magical matter.

Personality

Quick to smile and bursting with energy, Bête seemed to be incapable of cruelty at first glance. She seemed naturally cheerful and wielded a somewhat happy-go-lucky attitude, and never seemed to worry about the future, as she was never seen feeling hopeless. She treated her peers with great friendliness and was quite quick to greet Jessica and Frisk when she met them.

Nevertheless, despite appearing sweet and innocent, Bête's personality quickly dissipated after Dr.Gaster read the tale of two siblings, and at the same time, Asriel and Sans discovered some AMD camera footage of her doing questionable things. Here, Gaster learned that Agate Lightvale sacrificed her own soul to create a powerful creature that would make sure monster-kind and humanity never live in peace. Afterward, Bête wasted no time trying to hide the monster inside of her, quickly revealing that she enjoys it when she severely hurts others (both physically and emotionally), indicating that she has a very sadistic, ruthless, psychotic, and violent. She appears to enjoy hurting her opponents before she kills them, in fact, Bête is known for attempting to kill anyone in her way. It's also clear that she has no problem lying to, or betraying others, as she manipulated Jessica, into doing what she wanted them to do. Another example of this is when she casted a hallucination on Undyne, causing her to kill Alphys instead of Bête, or when she tortured Jessica by showing her a hallucination of a Alina, to get the hate vial.

When it comes to battles, she often becomes arrogant, which results in her underestimating her enemies. This, along with the fact she's not a very good strategist(probably due to her lack of a brain), and relies on brute force means a bit of planning can easily outsmart her, as shown in her fight with Gaster. Although, it is observed that she is able calculate, and knows how to get what she wants, but nevertheless seems to not be able to plan to an extent.

Bête also might suffer from necrophobia, as if a foe tries to attack her with a powerful blow, she wears an absolutely terrified expression on her face, showing she fears death immensely.

Known Abilities

  • Akumu: Before the two fused, Bête was capable of using Akumu as a weapon, as seen in Do or Die. The creature can form various weapons, such as a scythe or an arm-mounted blade. Bête can also send Akumu to attack alongside herself, as seen when she used it to destroy one of Gaster's hands.
  • Summoning/Life Creation: In "Do or Die", Bête summoned a plethora of Pink Creatures to serve her. These lifeforms can transpierce others which removes their soul, and they can also disguise themselves as others.
  • Hallucination Casting: Due to having the Soul of FEAR, Bête can cause others to hallucinate and she can control these hallucinations. She often uses this power to strike FEAR into an opponent's heart by creating hallucinations of someone, usually a loved one. Then, she jars them with a frightening change. For example, when Bête stole the vial that contained the HATE substance from Jessica Grey. Bête made her hallucinate that she was her daughter, then she jarred up the hallucination by giving her a demonic pair of eyes and a sadistic smile with her clothes torn up. She also displays this ability when she encountered Asriel and Sans. In which, she used her illusions to fool Asriel in believing that she was Chara, causing him to freeze in his tracks so that she could strike Asriel with her powerful spear.
  • Magic Sense: Like Zachary, Bete can see the soul or magic of a person or monster as seen in the episode"Love part 1".
  • Forcefield Creation: She created a forcefield to protect herself from the fires as seen in the episode "Game Over".
  • Energy Manipulation: At multiple points in Glitchtale, Bête has been seen utilizing what seems to be an energy of sorts, starting with light energy conjured from her spear in ""Do or Die", used against Gaster and later on in the series Bête can emit and form them into Dark Arrows after she fused with Akumu as seen in the episodes "My Promise" and "Game Over".
  • Energy Propulsion: At a brief point in My Promise, Betty in her fused form was seen using magical energy to forcefully jump off a building in order to ambush Asgore, Toriel, and Frisk (the propulsion was strong enough to damage the roof beneath her feet).
  • Immortality: Bête is shown to be biologically immortal and possesses eternal life, or at least an extended lifespan, having been around for around 300 years. In addition, she is resilient against physical damage; even before she attained her healing factor, Bête was unaffected after Undyne stabbed her in the shoulder.
  • Mind Reading: It is confirmed in the above conversation between Bête and Akumu that she can read memories and look into one's soul by looking at the victim's eyes. This is presumably also how she figures out her victims' worst fears.
  • Regeneration: In Game Over Mettaton Neo was able to damage Bete to where her skin fell off but she was able to heal all of her wounds without using HATE.
  • Hypersonic Speed: Like Undyne the Undying, Bête can move at speeds that make it look like she's teleporting.
  • Limb Modification: As seen in Game Over Part 2, Bête has demonstrated being capable of modifying her limbs (specifically her arms) into different constructs, such as extending spiked tentacles from her fingertips, claws, morphing her entire forearm and hand into a spear-like blade, and even extending her forearm to great lengths with a tentacle-like flexibility.
  • Pyrokinesis: As seen in Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒, Bete has a limited ability to manipulate fire. She can't generate it on her own, but can absorb it from other sources; she specifically uses this ability on Asgore and Toriel when they attempt to incinerate her, absorbing their fire and throwing it back at them.

  • Rhabdophobia: Bete's special attack that creates a negative pink area where she takes control of all enemy magic and allows her to use it against her enemies. Bete doesn't waste her powers by controlling an enemy's magic since it forces the target to use its own magic against themselves. However, repetitive use of this can be tolling. Rhabdophobia has a couple of meanings, but in this context, it means "FEAR of Magic."
  • Statistics Amplification: Bête usually grows stronger when more fear is around, the closer she is to death and how many souls she has. She feeds on the fears of others and even their own to get stronger. Usually when closer to death she grows stronger depending on how close she is to dying. This is seen in Do or Die; when Gaster was about to blast a beam from his Gaster Blaster to Bête, her hair turned fully pink and with enough strength, Akumu escaped the green force field Gaster trapped him in.

  • Mind Control: Through HATE, Bête can corrupt souls and force them under her control. Sans was the first victim of this power and Asriel followed not long after. It seems that the victims' souls must be in Bête's ownership before they can be affected.
  • HATE Barriers: In "Love-Part 2", Bête conjured a humungous dome of darkness/HATE around the part of the canyon where she was fighting Frisk.
  • Regenerative Healing Factor: Thanks to HATE, Bête possesses a regenerative healing factor, allowing her to heal wounds almost instantly and regrow limbs. However, it can be overtaxed and it is confirmed that the regen "can't heal everything."
  • Dark Energy Manipulation: In "Love-Part 1", After Akumu ate the HATE substance Bête conjured dark energy and swung that at Undyne. In "Love- Part 2", Bête summoned a wave of pink energy by slamming the ground sending Frisk flying and slashing into the side of the cliff.
  • HATE Tentacles: In "Love-Part 2", Bête extended a HATE tentacle from her right shoulder after Frisk severed her arm.

  • In addition, Bête is shown to be quite strong physically — able to heavily damage a wall with a single, casual punch in "My Promise" — she is very agile and athletic.

    History

    My Sunshine

"Hey! Thanks for saving me from that! Aren't you... Frisk? (Frisk: Yea!) My name's Betty. I saw you all over the news a month ago, pleased to meet you."
    – Bête introducing herself to Frisk

As Frisk was making their way to the Anti-Monsters Department (or AMD) HQ, they spotted Bête carelessly roaming the streets. It seemed like she was about to get hit by a car if it weren't for Frisk, who summoned their shield to protect her.

At first, the two seemed to get along, and Frisk continued their journey to the AMD HQ. Here, Frisk hoped to convince the AMD leader, Jessica Grey, to sign a peace treaty between monsters and humans.

After Frisk successfully managed to convince Jessica to give them a chance at showing her that monsters are kind creatures, they took her and Bête to Gaster's lab. Here, she met Gaster and he explained to Jessica how the core's expansion would be helpful to both humans and monsters. Bête was presumably listening because according to a Tumblr post, Bête was looking for something in Gaster's core.

Next, Frisk took Jessica and Bête to Toriel's school, where they asked Toriel to make one of her students demonstrate how to use their magic. During the demonstration, however, a pink blob-like creature popped out of Bête. Bête told everyone that the creature was Akumu (or Kumu for short), her "overprotective" helper.

Frisk later tookBête to Grillby's, where she met Sans and Asriel. Here, they questioned Bête about her soul and her magic. This forced her to tell them that her soul was no ordinary soul; it was pink. Upon learning about her unique soul trait, Gaster started researching about "Bête's Soul".

Eventually, the conference horribly erupted into chaos from the revelation that Asgore had murdered Alina, Jessica's daughter, twenty years ago, along with 5 other innocent children. And after Jessica stormed out of the HSO, a shadow-like creature (presumably Bête herself) gave Jessica an offer; if she did exactly what she told her to do, she would help her deliver out her revenge on monster-kind.

    Dust

"The pink trait... the 'Bete Noire'... (Grins evilly) The soul of FEAR."
    – Bête revealing her soul trait and her true self

After the episode's introduction, Bête appeared when Frisk visited W.D. Gaster. They asked him if he found anything about her soul, sadly, at the time, he had found nothing. Before they left to see Mettaton's first live performance, Bête decided to come along with them along with Papyrus, Sans, and Asriel.

When they arrived, Bête decided to go talk to Mettaton, while Papyrus at the moment spotted a girl stuck on a crane that was holding slabs of concrete. However, what he didn't know was Bête was just making him hallucinate the girl, which was just an illusion she created and was using her powers to conceal the fact that wasn't a real girl from Papyrus' view.

After he succeeded at moving the crane above the building's ceiling, the illusion that looked similar to Agate commanded him to push a button, resulting in him unintentionally dropping the concrete. Luckily, Sans used his powers to stop the concrete in its place. Using this opportunity, Jessica Grey, who was waiting for this, shot him with the Anti-Magic Ray.

Later, Sans and Asriel teleported to the AMD's recording room, where they investigated the camera's recordings; Asriel believed that the AMD was involved with what happened. The two of them then saw the recording where Frisk saved Bête from the car in the previous episode.

Surprisingly though, instead of a car appearing, nothing was there, indicating that she was using her powers to make Frisk see a car. The two also saw a recording of her leaving Gaster's lab during the conference. With this, Sans and Asriel learned that she was secretly orchestrating the events that occurred from the attempts to make peace with humans and monsters.

Before the two could leave, Bete entered the room. She wasted no time revealing her true nature. She told them that she really wanted to keep it a secret longer and spoil it herself, but that didn't really matter to her as she has all the information she needed anyway. Then she talks about Asriel's soul and talks about how special it is. She makes Asriel hallucinate into seeing Chara, causing him to freeze in his tracks. Little did he know that she was going to stab him with her powerful spear, and steal his soul. She threw her spear, but Sans, having failed to stop the attack with telekinesis due to being hit by the Anti-Magic Ray for the second time, teleported in front of him, sacrificing himself. She then took his soul and fed it to Akumu, turning him into dust. Asriel attacked her in grief, only for Akumu to shield her from the projectile attack. He prepared another attack, before retreating after remembering Sans telling him to warn the others.

Bête proceeded to order Jessica Grey to give her the HATE vial. When she refused, Akumu brutally grabbed her by her neck and pushed her against the wall. Bete then conjured an illusion, masquerading herself as Alina. She then jarred up the hallucination by giving her demonic eyes, cuts, and scrapes, and torn up clothes. The episode then cut to black, with Jessica's screams audible in the background.

"Don't worry, I'll keep my promise! I'll turn all those monsters to dust."
    – Bête talking to Jessica at the end of "Dust"

    Canon Conversation with Akumu

This conversation took place after the Dust episode, from what the dialogues indicate.[1]

    • Bête Noire: What am I?…
    • Bête Noire: Something made to be hated?…
    • Bête Noire: … Looks like it…
    • Bête Noire: I never asked to be made…
    • Bête Noire: I didn’t ask to be this way…
    • Bête Noire: But it’s what I am. And here we are trying to fulfill our purpose despite our doubts…
    • Akumu: …
    • Bête Noire: I know we don’t have other choice, you don’t need to remind me of that.
    • Bête Noire: Plus, we’ve already started. There’s no going back now. * We gotta make mom proud…
    • Akumu: …
    • Bête Noire: She told me you are and will be my only friend. That we can’t trust humans… that monsters are dangerous…
    • Bête Noire: That a civilization where the 2 races live together, is just a time bomb waiting to go off.
    • Bête Noire: That we’re doing good by speeding up the process.
    • Bête Noire: She’s right… I’ve seen what they’ve done. As soon as I look at someone’s eyes, I can see straight to their souls, like a window. It shows me everything, good and bad memories.
    • Bête Noire: Frisk looked nice and innocent at first. But then I saw the horrible things they did to his so-called “friends”…
    • Bête Noire: Then I thought monsters would be different… I saw Asgore… Those poor children.
    • Bête Noire: Then I saw Asriel, I thought his son would be different. But he was also keeping his secrets… he looked cute as a flower tho.
    • Bête Noire: The small skeleton was no different. He watched it all happen at first. And only intervened at the end. Only to murder them until he lost count.
    • Bête Noire: Trying to pretend something they’re not. Ha! And they got angry with me for doing the same. Hypocrites.
    • Bête Noire: I can see why mom wanted me to do this. I’ll do everything I can to fulfill my purpose.
    • Bête Noire: Humans are easier to deal with, most of them don’t even have magic, getting their souls will be easy. Monsters… will be slightly harder, I can’t trick Jessica again. But at least, I think I got rid of the strongest one.
    • Akumu: …
    • Bête Noire: What’s wrong, Kumu? Was that soul not enough?
    • Bête Noire: what?… it’s not drained yet? And you had enough to put the plan in action… would you look at that… and it still has a good portion left. We won the big prize with this one. It’ll be a while until it shatters.
    • Bête Noire: … don’t look at me like that, you’re always hungry.
    • Bête Noire: … hm? Sleep? What’s “sleep”? Oh… that human/monster thing… what about it? I don’t want to sleep… I… don’t know how to…
    • Bête Noire: So we’ll just wait for the sun to come out and we’ll do our thing ok? Just, get ready… it’ll be a long day…

    Do or Die

    "Kill them, Kumu."
    – Bête ordering Kumu to kill Alphys and Jessica Grey

Around the beginning of the episode, Bête was shown waiting in the core with Akumu. Soon, Akumu grabbed her attention and showed her Sans' soul, which was having its magic drained. She realized that the magic Akumu absorbed from Sans's was enough to start her plan and the screen then cut to black.

Later, it was revealed that Bête needed to drain a monster's/human's magic so they could create an army of Pink Creatures that she would use to search and steal the souls of humans.

Then, she is briefly seen commanding a Pink Creature to kill Alphys. Next time another Pink Creature(s) appeared in front of Frisk and then when Frisk tried to kill it, It became a hallucination of Sans. The Pink Creature(s) were beginning their "soul harvest", Gaster, who was accompanied by Alphys and Jessica Grey, cornered Bête in the nullifier room, forcing her to fight Gaster. He hoped to kill her himself and, if he failed, Alphys would activate the nullifier room, which she hoped would kill her once and for all.

As the "soul harvest" continued, Gaster and Bête continued fighting. During their fight, the slimes managed to gather some souls from human children. Gaster didn't know at the time, but, Bête's special attack, Rhabdophobia, was almost charged up.

During the fight, W.D. Gaster delivered serious damage to her. But, before he could finish her, a slime attempted to kill a girl named Lily but, her brother Cam sacrificed himself. But, as a result, the slime took his soul and Bête managed to fully charge up Rhabdophobia.

This allowed her to take control of his hands and his Gaster Blaster. She brutally attacked him and attempted to kill him by stabbing him in the back with her spear.

Luckily for him, Jessica and Alphys came in just in time. Jessica shot Bête, temporarily incapacitating her, after which Alphys gave Jessica an indigo artifact, allowing her to teleport back home with W.D. Gaster. Kumu attempted to attack her, only for Alphys to put up a shield around her. She planned to use the nullifier to kill Bête once and for all. She managed to activate it and it attacked her.

Alphys' shield soon disappeared, resulting in Bête impaling her with her spear. The nullifier didn't affect her; it only works on monsters and humans, but she was neither. Next, Undyne entered the room. She summoned her spear and launched it at Bête, only for Bête to hold Alphys' soul in the spear's path, resulting in Undyne accidentally killing her. She then took control of her spear and attempted to use it to kill Undyne too. However, she, due to her immense Determination, transformed into Undyne the Undying. The episode then ended on a cliffhanger.

    Love-Part 1

"WHY DID YOU DEVOUR THE ENTIRE THING YOU IDIOT!? (Coughs up HATE) I-I'm sorry for yelling... Akumu, this...this darkness...this horrible substance...we underestimated so much... I hardly feel like myself now. I can feel our goals, our very reason for existing slipping from our grasp. Kumu... I feel that this HATE has its own plans... I don't know how long I'll be able to decline them..."
    – Bête chatting with Akumu on how she felt after the creature ate the HATE vial

This episode begins with Bête confronting Undyne the Undying. Thanks to her determination, Undyne easily overwhelmed her. Eventually, Bête's patience ran thin. She charged up Rhabdophobia and attempted to use it on Undyne's spears.

Unfortunately for her, Undyne just created more spears, aimed at her, and finished her off with a giant, red energy spear that created a massive explosion. The blow from the spear was so powerful that it blew the roof off the Nullifier chamber and disintegrated Bête's back. after consuming the HATE.]]

Kumu, still alive, consumed the HATE vial, transferring its effects to Bête. Revived and intact, but visibly under the effects of HATE, Bête attacked Undyne again. Later in the fight, she began to cough up the HATE substance. This forced Bête and Kumu to retreat through the broken roof.

Later, Bête and Akumu were seen hiding in a rundown shed. She revealed to Akumu that she didn't feel like herself after consuming the HATE, and the fact that she was terrified of the HATE's goals. This means that she has standards.

Kumu comforted her as the Pink Creatures she created to gather human souls from the school arrived. She explained to Kumu that she had done what she needed to do; make Frisk look for them. The creature then consumed a large number of souls collected by the Pink Creatures before the scene cut to black.

Bête and Akumu were later mentioned by Frisk.

    Love-Part 2

"What took you so long? Did you need that much time to dry your tears? (...) Now that's more like it."
    – Bête taunting Frisk before their fight

Near the beginning of Love Part 2, whilst Frisk was thinking about their upcoming fight with Bête, she was seen smiling in an image in their mind. Amber also makes her cameo here.

Bête soon encounters Frisk and the two begin to fight. Thanks to Bête's ability to use HATE, she gained a massive advantage. During the fight, she managed to use Frisk's bad memories from their genocide route to deplete their DETERMINATION until it was almost gone. Later in the fight, Frisk was about to be killed if it wasn't for Asriel. Using her illusions, Akumu managed to kill Asriel and take his soul.

Frisk then managed to increase their LV to 19 and continued to fight Bête. She was nearly completely overwhelmed by their incredible power, which is slightly enhanced by HATE. So she "called for help." She pulled out Sans' soul from Akumu and filled it with HATE. HATE's regeneration ability brought back Sans' body. Sans then could only obey Bête's evil commands.

Frisk didn't stand a chance against Sans and was about to die if it wasn't for Papyrus help. Bête began to notice Toriel, Asgore, Gaster, and everyone else approaching. In an attempt to not let them interfere, she created a giant HATE shield (like Chara did in "Continue") which shielded herself, Akumu, Frisk, Papyrus, and Sans inside. Papyrus manages to take the HATE out of Sans using love. Then, the HATE shield shattered thanks to a beam that emanated from Sans; as a result, Bête was forced to retreat with Kumu.

    My Promise

"I'm not scared of an angry boy anymore. I know all your tricks now..."
    – Bête intimidating Frisk

When the episode began, Bête was seen furious about the fact that people were supposed to fear her but she has repeatedly been forced to retreat. She then made Kumu show her the souls that were collected from the soul harvest. Unfortunately for her, all of the souls were infected by HATE, except for Cam's soul. While draining it, she told Kumu to destroy all the souls, except for the Rainbow Soul.

A reason for destroying all the souls was because she didn't want to win by using HATE, she wanted to win with her own power. After Asriel's soul cracked, she told Kumu to use some HATE on his soul. After finishing the process of bringing out her new look, Bête told Asriel that they'll go hunt down the people that hurt him so much.

Later, when Frisk, Asgore, and Toriel came to the arena, Bête decided to "go say hi". Frisk, noticing Bête about to attack them, used a shield to try and block her attack, only to be sent backward from the impact. Asgore tried to attack her, but she effortlessly dodged the attack. She said that she was just going to fight Frisk, but Asgore and Toriel would get to fight somebody; Asriel Dreemurr.

Bête swooped in behind Frisk, who tried to attack her. However, she just blocked the attack. She claimed that she's no longer scared of them because she knows all their tricks.

After Asriel stabbed Asgore, and Frisk tackled him, Frisk told Asgore and Toriel that they'll have to retreat. Bête however, didn't want them to escape and made Asriel attack Frisk.

    Game Over Part-1

Bête makes a small cameo near the ending of the episode. She is seen nearby the city arena alongside Asriel, who was resting against a wall. They tell Asriel that "it's time" and an army of Pink Creatures surround the area and tells them that they'll see who will be running away this time.

    Game Over-Part 2

Bête first appears when the humans seal a barrier up to protect civilians. She attacks a man with a dark energy shape arrow and gets shot at by a woman. She suddenly appears directly in front of her, cutting her head off. Bête stands over a body with a yellow SOUL, draining its magic. She notices Seth on the ground in fear and asks if they're scared. She then tells them of how 'it only hurts a little.' As she's about to kill him, Mettaton shines his spotlight on her. She is shown to be disintegrating and struggling to

break free. After some time, she destroys the spotlight and launches at Mettaton. Once she has him, she launches him into the ground. She jumps down, ready to attack. As she's about to kill Mettaton, Isabelle throws him his 'NEO' briefcase, and he catches it and escapes Bête's attack. She seems to be annoyed that he's trying to stop her. She attempts to attack Mettaton, but he grabs her arm and launches his canon at her face. Giant parts of her skin peeled off, revealing she looks more like Akumu,

having multiple sharp teeth and pink skin. She then comments, 'Alright. That hurt a little.'

Bête continues to dodge Mettaton's attacks, agreeing to 'play' with him. He tried to sneak-attack her with his canon but she dodges. As she launched up to him, he attempted to kick her, but she grabbed his leg. However, Mettaton pushed her away, forcing her into the ground. Bête then notices rubble on the ground and attempts to throw it at Mettaton. As he gets distracted by the rocks, she launches a spear at him, wounding his shoulder. She then launches up at him, ready to attack, asking, 'You don't fight very often, do you?' She throws him to the ground, severely damaging him.

As she prepares to deal the finishing blow, Muffet ties her up with her webs. Grillby then interferes, attacking Bête with fire. Bête has a shield up to dodge Grillby's fire, but she gets annoyed, saying, 'I'm done playing with you.' She throws Grillby into the wall and punches Muffet to the ground. As she prepares to kill Muffet, Mettaton returns the favor, shining the spotlight on Bête once more. She simply walks through it, showing no struggle, and launches an energy arrow at him. She comments on how he ran out of energy and smiles at his broken body. She then is surprised to feel him grab his leg. He refuses to let go.

Then, she pitifully asks why he tries so hard on a battle which he can't win, he says of how he just needed to make some time. Chara then enters, ready to attack. Bête tries to run but is stopped by Mettaton. She is launched into the wall and attempts to get up. When she does, Chara orders them to stay down, shooting at Bête. Bête is about to be shot, but Asriel comes to her defense. She then asks Chara if she's the only thing he should be worried about.

Bête begins to explain her motives, she explains how she's only trying to stop history from repeating itself, 'sacrificing a couple hundred to save thousands.' She then elaborates on how much magic and power she has, enough to wipe out the entire city. She plans to get rid of all the monsters and then take over the humans. She then questions why they're even trying to stop her anymore, saying of how their efforts will be in vain. She then says of how, for her, it's just the beginning, but for Chara, it's Game Over.

    Ḣ̸͈a̷̞̽ẗ̵̥́e̸̟͒

We first see Bête in this episode fighting Chara. Chara uses their Special Hell attack on Bête while Toriel surrounds Asriel in a flame wall. Chara confronts Asriel and Bête tries to intervene but she is interrupted by Asgore and Toriel. Bête is cornered by Asgore and Toriel as she gets impaled by Asgore's Trident.

Later, we see Toriel healing up a wound of Asgore, here Bête tells Asgore to "think of the people who would be alive if he had just died". After this ordeal, Asgore claims that Bête's comments can't hurt him as much as he is about to hurt her. Bête then starts to use the memories of the two against them, Bête summons a bow (which is supposed to seem like Roy's) which upsets Asgore.

They attack Bête but she fights back even harder where Toriel attacks Bête with fire magic, but Bête blocks it easily, segregate it and then reflects towards them with more strength. (In that moment, Agate makes her another non-physical cameo behind Bête.)

The attack causes the place to drown in smoke and dust, Bête uses her hallucination ability on Toriel which causes her to see all the previous six children that she had failed to save. Asgore notices this and tries to make Toriel snap out of it, but is hopeless, Bête taunting them both, takes this opportunity to punch Asgore in the chest. Asgore then defends himself and shoots a flame at Bête which causes her "skin" to disintegrate slightly, though she quickly heals the damage that was done to her. After this, Asgore does a lot of damage to Bête which puts her in "trouble", but it just happened to have been one of her tricks, causing Toriel to shoot a powerful flame attack at Asgore.

This left a huge scar on Asgore's chest and leaving him unconscious and potentially dead.

The episode then tragically ends with Bête saying she didn't expect such a hard hit, and further asks Toriel quite menacingly if she hated Asgore that much.

    Animosity

Bête is first seen casting a hallucination of Asgore on Toriel. She attempts to kill Toriel but is interrupted by Gaster, who cuts her arm off. Bete shields herself from any more of Gaster's attacks, one of them causes holes to appear in the Arena's well and she escapes through one of them.

Outside, she questions why Gaster is in the Arena in the first place. Sans suddenly shows up behind her and shoots a Gaster Blaster at her. Annoyed, Bête mocks Sans and Papyrus, saying that they are merely a 'jester and his lackey'. She tells them that she isn't scared of them but gets punched by one of Gaster's hands and is sent flying, only to hit a wall. Bete says that they have trapped her in a chain, but a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. She targets Papyrus and tries to hurt him but Papyrus attacks her before she does, a bone slams her into a building. One of Gaster's hands punches her again and she flies through an office building then Sans uses a Gaster Blaster to blast her into the ground. Bete lands on a wall and pushes herself to jump at Gaster, she is stopped midair using telekinesis and is slammed into a wall.

Bête tries to escape from the trio and shoots arrow-like projectiles at a building, causing debris to fall on the road and lessening the chances of any of them to follow after her. However, Papyrus rushes towards her and dodges all the falling debris and stops her using blue bones before she could successfully escape. Bête punches Papyrus the attack sends him flying and making an impact on a nearby building's wall. Gaster and Sans target her with Gaster Blasters, she shields herself from the blasts, the HATE tries to take over Bête but she refuses and she screams, causing Sans and Gaster to seize fire. Exhausted, Bête desperately tries to make the trio stop attacking her, she grabs Papyrus with an enlarged hand and tells them to stop. She squeezes Papyrus, Sans quickly teleports behind her and attack her with a Gaster Blaster.

Angered, Sans tells Bête that he's had enough, he puts himself on top of a Gaster Blaster and flies upwards. He says that they should just end everything right now, he snaps his fingers and spawns multiple Gaster Blasters. Bête is seemingly scared by this so her hair turns fully pink, Gaster suddenly remembers her Rhabdophobia ability and yells at Sans to stop. Unfortunately for them, however, Bête uses her ability and takes all of the Gaster Blasters for herself. She fires all of them at Sans but Gaster uses his hands to protect Sans from the incoming fire. The blast causes Gaster's hands to break and he passes out temporarily. Seeing how Gaster and Papyrus are vulnerable, Bête aims all of the Gaster Blasters at them. Sans teleports in front of them and summons another wave of Gaster Blasters to counter the attack, this massive attack causes Sans to melt, but Sans' Gaster Blasters overpower Bête's.

Because Sans exerted so much of his magic into the attack, he eventually turns into Dust and dies. Bête tries to attack Gaster and Papyrus by sending an arrow projectile at them but Gaster blocks it. She tries to convince herself that things will be more likely to be in her favor since she is only facing a duo instead of a trio. Gaster tells her to come at him and Bête takes this as him underestimating her power, she attacks Gaster from behind but he blocks it again and uses blasts her away. Bête tries to attack him again and extends her fingers into the ground and all of them pop out like tentacles. Gaster counters this immediately and slices all of the tentacles in half, causing Bête to lose her fingers. Gaster traps Bête in a string and throws her against the ground. Gaster sends magical bullets after her but she dodges and blocks all of them.

Gaster eventually uses Polychromatism against Bête. He uses both of his giant hands to rip Bête into two, stabs her with multiple purple spikes and crushes her into the ground with a giant hand, and blasts her with a giant Gaster Blaster. Surprisingly, Bête still seems to be alive after all the attacks, as a result, Gaster sends multiple blasts after her, disintegrating her into a hollow husk.

After her death, she says that her enemies made a big mistake by killing her because they let out the HATE that won't stop until it destroys everything. As HATE takes control over Bête's body and powers, it transforms into a frantically powerful HATE monster possessing Bête's body and magic.

    Trivia

    • Bête shares various similarities to Cozy Glow, methodically, idealistically, and visibly.
    • Bête can never turn into Amber because her soul is long gone due to Agate. After all, she has Agate's soul and NOT Amber's soul.[2][3]
      • Bête is NOT Amber, nor did the body. She has ever belonged to Amber.
      • Though, Bête Noire knows who Amber is.[4]
    • In the Pacifist Route/Pacifist Route of Undertale, Flowey asks Frisk what they would do if they meet a "Relentless killer" that they won't be able to talk out of fighting them. Bête fits this description, though it is unknown if that was intentional on Camila's behalf or not.
    • Bête's "new look" in "My Promise" isn't a transformation, but her real appearance. In fact, what the audience has seen until My Promise was her transformation.[5]
    • She can turn her hands into pink claws or their "innocent" appearance as seen in Game Over Part 2.
    • When Bête damaged Gaster's soul in Do or Die, it triggered the first flashbacks he had on his experiences in the void.[6]
    • Before "Love-Part 2" was released, Camila said that Cam's soul is the most powerful soul Bête has collected.[7]
    • Bete doesn't have a gender.[8].
    • Betty is a nickname for "Bete Noire". [9][10]
      • Bête's real name, Bête Noire, comes from the French term Bête Noire, which means Bête=Beast and Noire=Black "someone or something that one particularly dislikes." This is fitting, as for her creator, Agate Lightvale, monsters were her bête noire. This could also be referring to the fans and most Glitchtale characters, as several people have a dislike towards her. Bête Noire in French specifically means "Black Beast".
      • Camila said in the description of her speedpaint "The Black Beast" that one of the other reasons why Bête is also called "Black Beast" is because Bête feeds on HATE in order to get stronger.[11]
    • Bête's special attack was first announced in an amino post of Camila.[12]
    • Veir stated that "Bête fears death".
      • "Do or Die" confirmed it when Bête was about to be killed by one of Gaster's gaster blasters.
    • In "My Sunshine", Bête can be seen looking around the AMD HQ while Frisk was talking with Jessica.
    • Bête seems to grow more powerful by absorbing human and monster souls, which also causes her hair to turn increasingly pink. It also activates her special attack, Rhabdophobia.
    • Camila Cuevas once had Bête's profile photo on YouTube, even before she was seen in the series.
    • It was revealed in "Do or Die" and the description of a speedpaint video that one FEAR soul can exist at any moment, and the same goes for determination.
    • Gaster told Frisk in "Do or Die" that only a fear soul can defeat a user of the determination soul trait and vice versa.
    • Rhabdophobia (in the case of Bête's special attack, since Rhabdophobia has multiple meanings) is the fear of magic. This information was uncovered at the beginning of a speedpaint video.
    • Bête does not eat, sleep or bleed.[13] This was shown in "Love-Part 1", when Bête did not shed any blood after being hit by Undyne's spear.
    • If Akumu dies, Bête will slowly die, and the same applies to Akumu. The same is true for both, but they do not die immediately, it should take a while. If this were to happen, the cause of death would be from running out of magic, because they use magic to live
    • Camila once said on her Tumblr page that Bête's soul is pink because pink is a color that looks innocent and can also trick the characters and the audiences.
    • Before Dust came out, Camila released a screenshot, which features Sans and Bête. [14].
    • Bête is afraid of HATE's intentions.[15][16]
    • Killing monsters and humans are none of Bête's intentions, although it's not enough to stop her. It's not necessary to kill them all.[17]

    • The Bête Noire Spell is a couple of hundred years old, but Bête's body age is 13, and it will never progress.
    • Camila doesn't want to explain why Bête is interested in Asriel's soul.[19]
    • According to a post, Bête was looking for something in the CORE. And, in another post, it was revealed that she was looking for a "very special" soul in Gaster's lab that might be hidden within the CORE. Looking closely at the power generator in the True Lab, a faint red heart could be seen, which might have belonged to a previous Determination soul bearer. After all, Determination can "refuse to die", which might explain why it was taken out of the host without being shattered. But, since it cannot return to whoever it host was, it seems as this SOUL lacks the Determination to return to the bearer.
    • Much like Chara, if Hard Mode wasn't activated, Bete would never have existed in Season 2 and the consequences of her activities would have never occurred.[20]
    • Bête is not strong enough to beat Undyne.[21]
    • Bête doesn't care that the timeline will be erased if she kills Frisk.[22]

    • The reason why Bête didn't absorb Alphys' soul was that doing so wouldn't have made a big difference in her powers regardless.[25]
    • When Bête is consumed by HATE and her hair is fully pink, it doesn't mean she can use Rhabdophobia, it means she is terrified.[26]

    • Bête let Frisk, Toriel, and Asgore escape because she was so caught up in wanting to be feared. [32]
    • Bête doesn't have any human organs. The only way to kill her is to make her run out of magic or disintegrate her with a really powerful attack. [33]

    • Before My Promise, Bête was just an empty shell. But after fusing with Akumu, she now has "physical matter" present inside of her.[38][39]
    • At the end of My Sunshine, the "Bête" at Gaster's house was Akumu disguised as her.[40]
    • Camila was thinking of adding a scene where Bête encounters what is left of Agate Lightvale's corpse, but she decided against it since it would have been confusing at the time. Camila decided to make it a short comic instead.[41]
    • She cannot feel almost all the emotions humans and monsters usually are able to feel, (love, empathy, etc.)
    • At the end of Game Over part 1, Bête quotes that "They're doomed to make the same mistakes" which is a reference to "Scared Of Me".
    • In My Promise, Bête said she won't use HATE to win. The last time she used HATE was when she used it on Asriel. Currently, she hasn't used HATE throughout the rest My Promise and Game Over.
    • In Game Over part 2, we see Bête's new power and alteration when she fuses with Akumu such as her body regenerating without using HATE, her spear is now a dark magenta color, and she able to conjure a dark energy shape arrows.
    • Losing the control to HATE is a big threat to Bête Noire because it's basically dying, except that aside from dying she knows she won’t have control of herself anymore.[42]
    • Bete's soul is not extracted from HATE.
    • There is a font named "Betty Noir."
    • There are two ways to kill the Bête Noire.
    1. They need to make her run out of magic.
    2. Blast her dead in 1 shot, as Gaster did with Polychromatism after tearing her in half.
    3. Attack her repeatedly with highly powerful attacks, as shown in Animosity.

    Navigation

Bête for the most part, thinks what she is doing is right. According to a post, and a couple of lines from Scared of Me, she believes that monsters and humans living together is "like a time bomb waiting to go off". Therefore, she thinks that what she's doing is "just speeding up the process", this easily means that Bête's views on humans and monsters living together are the exact same as Agate's. In addition, she knows everyone's past, as she can read anyone and how their past was like. She uses the mistakes of other characters' to justify what she does, with an example of this being when Asriel (as Flowey) killed almost everyone in the Underground, as she considers this act distasteful.

In addition to this, she even seems to care about Akumu, as for example, in Do or Die, she seemed concerned when the creature was hurt in their battle with Gaster. Both Kumu and Bête treasure each other like their best and only friend, but regardless of this false hope, Cami said it was likely just a kind of instinct since they need each other to live. As, if one of them dies, the other slowly dies due to the lack of magic and inability to collect souls without the other half.

While under HATE's control, Bête acts far more violent and insane than what she already is. In this state, if she gets into a battle, she mercilessly attacks her foes with a twisted black smile on her face. Also, Bête seems to be scared of HATE's plans, as it could control her, this means she knows the hate has different plans than her own. Most likely because Bête only has the intent to kill Frisk and killing others isn't really necessary unless they need it for power. While HATE, just wants to cause chaos and havoc with no purpose whatsoever.

    Trivia

    Akumu

    "Kumu... There you are..."
    – Bête Noire after Akumu saved her from Gaster's attack

Akumu (meaning "nightmare" in japan),  or Kumu for short, is a part of bête in the sense that Bête Noire spell can split itself into two different beings. Not much is known about it/him. He is considered the secondary antagonist of Season 2.

The creature is voiced by Strelok, who also voices Frisk and Flowey and provides the sound design.

It is assumed that Akumu is a part of Betty, her counterpart or other half created along side her when an ancient wizard of Bravery sacrificed her soul to create the demon of Fear. Although they interact like good friends from time to time, Betty usually uses Akumu's shapeshifting abilities as a weapon, having him turn into blades on her hands or a scythe.

    Appearance

    "He's so cut- oh..."
    Camila in a post.

Kumu is a bubblegum-like pink blob that has a face. It appears to be able to change its size and shape.

When it's in its [[1]] form, it gains black sclera and a black crooked mouth.

    Personality

    "You're always hungry."
    – Bete to Kumu, also showing Kumu's hunger for souls

Much like Bête Noire, throughout "My Sunshine" and a portion of "Dust", Kumu didn't seem to be evil. It acted somewhat friendly and playful, which was shown when it ran off with one of Gaster's books, which is suspected to be the tale of the twin siblings. However, according to Bête, it was a tad overprotective. But this all changed after the creature revealed the evil inside itself.

Kumu appears to be sadistic and doesn't care if it severely hurts others. According to a post, the creature wields a hunger for souls and treasures Bête as their best and only friend.

Not much else is know about Kumu's personality, apart from the fact that Bête Noire is controlling this creature. This was revealed in the description of a speedpaint video.

    Abillities

    • Shapeshifting: Kumu can change shape and turn into a wide variety of weapons, different objects and is able to change their form entirely. An example of this is in Dust when Asriel tried to attack Bête. An example of being able to change form is when it was able to change into a mini version of Bête.
    • Sickle: Kumu transformed into what appears to be a sickle-like object in "Love-Part 1" in an attempt to try to fight off Undyne the Undying. Its strength is unknown but it was capable of cutting skin.
    • Arm-mounted blades: Kumu can mount itself onto one of Bête's arms to create an arm-mounted blade, which was displayed in "Do or Die".
    • Shield: As seen in Love Part 1 when Undyne hurled a spear at Bête and Kumu, Kumu became a shield to protect Bête.
    • Flight/Floating: Kumu has shown the ability of flight very frequently throughout the series.
    • Summoning: In "Do or Die", Kumu summoned several pink creatures for the soul harvest.
    • Pocket Reality Manipulation: Both the Pink creatures and Akumu have a reality pocket to contains the souls and only they can show them.
    • Spear of Fear: In "Love-Part 2", it was revealed that Akumu can summon Spear of Fear too. They used it to collect Asriel's soul.

    History

    My Sunshine

"What is that thing? It's awesome."
    Frisk complimenting Kumu

    "Don't come out! Stay there!"
    – Bête to Kumu

After Frisk took Jessica Grey and Bête to Toriel's school, when Bête was meeting Toriel, her soul reacted to Toriel's approach. As a result, Kumu popped out of Bête. The creature soon shape-shifted into a tiny flower on her head. Kumu stays on Bête's head as a tiny pink flower for the rest of the episode.

    Dust

When Frisk comes over to Gaster's house, Kumu can be seen playfully carrying around a book.

Near the end of the episode, Asriel and Sans find out about Bête Noire's true intentions. Before leaving, Bete soon appears. She gave up on attempting to hide the monster inside her and removes Sans's soul from his body and feeds Kumu with it.

Asriel soon escapes and Bête asks Jessica for the HATE vial that she has. After refusing to give it to her, Kumu grabs Jessica and slams her against the wall. The screen soon cuts to black.

    Do or Die

Minutes into the animation, Kumu is seen with Bête at the Core. The creature soon shows Bête Sans' soul and how it was draining its magic. Bête Noire soon realizes that she had enough magic to "start her plan" (which is the soul harvest).

Before fighting Gaster, Bête is seen ordering Kumu to attack Alphys before one of her pink blobs attacked her. Later, Kumu fights alongside Bête Noire against Gaster.

During the fight, Bête stabs Gaster in the back, causing him to pass out. But thankfully, Jessica and Alphys come in just in time to rescue him. Alphys gives Jessica a dark blue artifact, which allows her to teleport back home. Alphys puts up a green shield around herself and activates the nullifier. The nullifier then attacked Bête and Kumu.

Alphys' shield soon gets deactivated. Bete then attacks her. It turns out that it didn't affect either of them because it only works on monsters and humans, but she and Kumu are neither of the two. Undyne soon entered the room. Bête then tricks her into killing Alphys and attempted to kill her too. But, she turned into Undyne The Undying. The episode ended at this point.

    Love-Part 1

Near the beginning of the episode, Kumu and Bête fight Undyne the Undying, who easily overwhelmed the two with her Determination. Undyne then uses her special attack, "The Spear of Justice". That attack was enough to disintegrate half of Bête Noire's body and destroy the roof of the entire nullifier room. Akumu then ate the Hate vial they took from Jessica in "Dust". Bête was able to recover half of their body using Hate, but this was still not enough to defeat Undyne. Bête then coughed out some Hate, not knowing what may happen to Bête so, both of them flee from the battle.

Later, Bête and Kumu are seen hiding out in an abandoned shed. Bête confronted Akumu as she told the creature that she hardly felt like herself now due to the HATE. Eventually, Bête's pink blobs arrive. Kumu proceeds to consume them, and the souls they managed to gather.

Neither Bête nor Kumu was seen throughout the rest of the episode, not counting when Frisk mentioned them when they were talking to Asriel.

    Love Part 2

When the episode began, Kumu was seen with Bête in an image inside Frisk's mind.

Later, the duo encountered Frisk and they began to fight. Before the duo could finish them, Asriel decided to interfere. However, Kumu managed to take his soul while he was fighting her. Upon seeing Asriel's "death", Frisk's LV became 19 and turned the tides of the battle as a result, creating a fair battle.

Getting an idea, Bête used Kumu to grab Sans' soul and fill it with HATE. Sans, under HATE's control, began to fight Frisk. After Papyrus jumped in the fight and managed to remove the HATE from Sans, Bete and Kumu were forced to retreat.

    My Promise

Akumu was seen at the beginning of the episode, with Bête, who was furious that they were running away, even though they were supposed to be feared. Bête orders Akumu to show them the souls that were infected by HATE. Akumu then shows Bête the souls they had consumed by making itself bigger and making a force field around Bête. Bête then starts cracking the souls due to the fact that HATE has infected most of the souls. Bête decides to keep Asriel's soul and absorb the magic of Cam's soul then tells Akumu to destroy the remaining souls.

Bête tells Akumu that she is tired of being split in two so she throws her spear at Akumu in order to fuse with them. The spear hits Bête and then slowly both Bête and Akumu start fusing transforming into their true form. Akumu was not seen again as they were fused with Bête for the rest of the episode.

    Trivia

    • Akumu is written 悪夢 in terms of Kanji which means nightmare in Japanese.
      • In addition, "Akuma" (悪魔) translated to english means Evil/Devil.
    • Before his revival, Camila revealed that Sans' soul was still alive inside Kumu.[1]
    • If Akumu dies, Bête will slowly die in a short time and vice versa. They don't die immediately, it should take a while. This could be because they share the same soul.
    • Akumu doesn't have a gender, just like Bête.[2]However, unlike Bête, the creature is typically referred to as an asexual being but is referred to as a "he" by Camila.
    • It is possible to remove a soul from Akumu.[3]
    • In Japanese, Akumu means "Nightmare" and Akuma means "Demon".
    • In one Tumblr post, Camila released a canon conversation between Bête and Akumu that was never alluded to in-series. [4]
    • HATE is unable to control Kumu because of an unknown reason.[5]
    • Kumu and Bete were completely overwhelmed by Undyne's enormous strength and couldn't take her down.[6]
    • Kumu and Bete were looking for a "very special" soul in the core.[7][8]
    • Killing half of humans and monsters is enough to stop Kumu and Bête.[9]
    • In Undyne's battle with Bête, Akumu shielded Bête from Undyne. Before the episode came out, Akumu as a shield was seen as impenetrable, however, Undyne easily cut through Akumu with her spear; proving Undyne's great strength.
    • On her amino, Camila released a GIF of Kumu and Bete before she finished Do or Die.
    • At the end of My Sunshine, the sleeping "Bête" at Gaster's house was Akumu disguised as her. [10]
